Approved contractors
Grant work must be done by a contractor from the state's approved list — your own roofer can't be paid by the program unless they join it. This is the published list, reformatted for humans; the authoritative version lives atskh.ky.gov.
Before you call
- Confirm they'll travel to your county — the list is statewide but coverage is not.
- Get more than one quote. Nothing in the program requires you to take the first price.
- Any contractor who suggests starting work before your approval letter is telling you to forfeit your grant. The rule is absolute.

Coverage is uneven
Louisville, Lexington, and western Kentucky are reasonably served. Eastern Kentucky is thin: Prestonsburg, Morehead, and Columbia are the only approved contractors east of I-75 as of this list. If you're in an uncovered area, the program FAQ says to confirm contractor availability before paying for an evaluation — take that seriously.
Roofers: joining this list is now free
A 2026 law (HB 527) reimburses contractors for the cost of initial IBHS roofing-contractor certification. If you're a Kentucky roofer, certification gets you onto a short state list attached to $10,000 grants. Details atskh.ky.gov andfortifiedhome.org.
